Two Tri-County Toastmaster members earn awards at Division Contest


Tri-County Toastmaster members who took part in the recent Division C Speech Contests were (from left): Todd Austin - chief judge; Dawn Boyer - 1st place Humorous Speech Contest winner; and Les Apps - 3rd place in both Humorous Speech and Tabletopics Contests.

Three members of the Tri-County Toastmasters club attended the Division C Contests on Saturday, October 8, 2005 in Springfield. Dr. Todd Austin from Virden served as the chief judge for both humorous speech and table topics contests. The chief judge’s duties are to assemble a panel of judges from several different clubs and to make sure all judges are aware of all contest and judging rules.

Dawn Boyer from Auburn took first place in the Humorous Speech Contest with her speech called "My Summer Vacation". As the contest winner, Boyer will be one of only 5 speakers competing at the District 8 Humorous Speech Contest in Fairview Heights, IL on November 19th.

Les Apps from Girard took third place in the speech contest with his speech called "Shopping" as well as third place in the impromptu speaking or table topics contest.

The Toastmaster club will next meet on Thursday November 3, 2005 at 6:30 p.m. at the Community Center at 105 West Jackson Street in Virden. The scheduled speaker for next meeting is Jackie Rakers. The Tri-County Toastmasters club met on Thursday in Virden. Club members present at the meeting were: Les Apps, Dr. Todd Austin, Jim Blankenship from New Berlin, Rev. Ron Grimes, Jackie Rakers, Alan Saeger, Cheryl Savage and Billy Watkins. President Grimes also welcomed Liz Mollett from Auburn as the clubs newest member.

Alan Saeger served as the Toastmaster of thursday’s meeting. Cheryl Savage conducted the impromptu speaking (or table topics) portion of the program. Her questions were all on topics related to finances, which made for some interesting responses.

The evening’s first prepared speaker was Les Apps, who gave a humorous speech. The second speaker was Dawn Boyer from Auburn, who was giving her first speech as a Toastmaster.

Virden also hosted the Area 1 2005 Humorous Speech and Table Topics contests on Saturday. Winners will compete in the Division Contests to be held in Springfield. Tri-County members Dawn Boyer and Les Apps both won an award in each contest.
