Tri-County Toastmasters Meets in New Berlin 7/6/06

The Tri-County Toastmasters club met on Thursday 7-6-06 at Blankenship Financial Planning in New Berlin. Club members present at Thursday’s meeting were: Les Apps, Dr. Todd Austin, Jim Blankenship from New Berlin, John Davidson, Rev. Ron Grimes, Alan Saeger and Billy Watkins.

A special dignitary, Eileen Kluckman, the newly elected Division C Governor was present at Thursday’s meeting. Kluckman also served as the evening’s Master of Ceremonies. Alan Saeger served as the Tabletopicmaster, conducting the impromptu speaking portion of the program, during which he asked each participant a different question pertaining to recent decisions of the supreme court. Participants then came up with one to two minute responses. Todd Austin presented the word-of-the-week, which was ‘purvey’ meaning to supply or provide.

Division C Governor Eileen Kluckman (left) officially swore in Tri-County member Les Apps as the newly elected Area 1 Governor at Thursday’s meeting.

The Division C Governor officially welcomed Girard’s Les Apps as the new Area 1 Governor. Apps was one of the original 6 members of the Tri-County Club dating back to April 1997. Apps served as club president for 3 years from 2000 to 2003, and currently serves as the the club vice president of education. As Area 1 Governor, he will oversee the operation of 2 Springfield clubs, the Tri-County club and a club in Waverly.

The two speakers at the July 6th Tri-County Toastmasters meeting were (from left): John Davidson and Billy Watkins, both of which gave speeches having to do with U.S. presidents.

The evening’s first prepared speaker was John Davidson, who delivered an informative and dramatic presentation entitled "Our Country’s First President", which focused not on George Washington, but rather on on John Hanson, who was elected the first president of the United States of Congress Assembled. (This pre-dates Washington being elected the first president of the U.S.A.) The second prepared speaker was Billy Watkins. Watkins is working from an advanced communication manual on interpretive reading. His speech was a rendition of a Ronald Reagan speech entitled "Tear Down This Wall".

The Toastmasters club will next meet on Thursday July 20, 2006 at 6:30 p.m. in Virden at the Virden Area Community Center (located at 105 West Jackson Street). The scheduled speakers for next meeting are John Davidson and Jim Blankenship. "Guests and new members are always welcome to attend our club meetings, which are devoted to helping Central Illinoisans to fine-tune both their communication and leadership skills" states club president Ron Grimes.
