9/7/06 Meeting

The Tri-County Toastmasters club met on Thursday 9-7-06 at the Virden Area Community Center. Club members present at Thursday’s meeting were: Les Apps, Dr. Todd Austin, Jim Blankenship, John Davidson, Rev. Ron Grimes, Liz Mollett from Auburn, Marcia Osterholt, Jackie Rakers, Alan Saeger, Michelle Suslee and Billy Watkins. The two guests present at the meeting were Kim Noyes and Helen Cearlock.

Ron Grimes served as the Master of Ceremonies of Thursday’s meeting. Les Apps led the impromptu speaking portion of the meeting, during which each participant was given a different question. Each then delivered a one to two minute response. Liz Mollett came up with the word-of-the-week, which was ‘canard’ meaning a false or misleading story.
The evening’s first prepared speaker was Jim Blankenship, a certified financial planner from New Berlin. Blankenship, an avid hunter, gave a demonstration speech entitled “Safe and Proper Handling of Firearms”. The second prepared speaker was John Davidson who gave a humorous ‘after dinner’ speech.
The Toastmasters club will next meet on Thursday September 21, 2006 at 6:30 p.m. at the Community Center at 105 West Jackson Street in Virden. The scheduled speaker for next meeting is Les Apps. “Guests and new members are always welcome to attend our club meetings, which are devoted to helping people to improve their communication and leadership skills” states club vice-president Todd Austin.
