Toastmasters Welcome Guest

Club president Les Apps (right) welcomed Casey Tom, CPA as a guest at the last Tri-County Toastmasters meeting

Liz Mollett was the prepared speaker at the last Tri-County Toastmasters meeting. Her speech “The Great Pretender” achieved her project’s objective of using body language to enhance the speech’s message

The Tri-County Toastmasters club met on Thursday 1-17-08 at the Virden Area Community Center. Club members present at Thursday’s meeting were: Les Apps from Girard, Dr. Todd Austin from Virden, Jim Blankenship from New Berlin, John Davidson from Carlinville, Liz Mollett from Auburn, Alan Saeger and Bill Watkins. One guest, Casey Tom, a CPA from Springfield was also present.

Jim Blankenship served as the meeting’s master of ceremonies. Billy Watkins conducted an ‘American Idol’ themed version of Tabletopics (the impromptu speaking portion of the program). Each participant had to give a 1 to 2 minute impromptu response to the three-part question: “What would it take to get you to try out for American Idol, which song would you choose to perform, and why?.”

The evening’s prepared speaker was Liz Mollett. Mollett delivered a very entertaining presentation called ‘The Great Pretender”. It was a project from the basic Toastmasters manual on ‘Using Body Language’. Todd Austin evaluated her speech.

Some members of the Toastmasters club have also been keeping busy since the 1-17-08 meeting. Club members Les Apps, Todd Austin and Alan Saeger along with two St. Louis area Toastmasters put on a demonstration meeting for over a dozen faculty and students at Quincy University in Quincy, IL on 1-22-08.

Dr. Austin also delivered a Power Point presentation to over 20 Macoupin County Master Gardeners on 1-24-08 in Carlinville about ‘Bats & Bat Houses’. Austin, a Bat Conservation International member since 1990, elaborated about how many Central IL bat species are beneficial and shared information about attracting them to manmade bat houses. Austin has been a Bat Conservation International member for over 17 years.

The Toastmasters club will next meet on Thursday February 7, 2008 at 6:30 p.m. at the Virden Area Community Center. For more information about the Toastmasters program, or about joining or attending a club meeting, please call (217) 965-3100 or send e-mail to draustin@royell.net.
